Grey 17 was one of only a handful of survivors from an alien survey ship that crashed on Earth almost 50 years ago. As part of a non-disclosure agreement he had to sign in order to be allowed to register as a superhero, he is not allowed to confirm or deny any information regarding Roswell, Area 51, or any government conspiracy involving the detention and study of extraterrestrials.

Although informally associated with The Defense League for many years, he was never actually a member and wasn't present at the final epic battle that claimed the lives of all of its original members. He has since joined the newly formed D.E.F.E.N.S.E. Incorporated, and hopes to use his alien abilities to protect the planet that has become his home.
